Letter to North Devon Gazette – Lib Dem Fight Back

by aldc on 19 June, 2015

The North Devon Gazette has published my letter in this week’s edition.

Dear Editor

Firstly I would like to thank everyone in Bickington and Roundswell who voted for me in the recent local elections. In the end I missed out getting on to the North Devon District Council by just 10 votes. Had another 5 votes been cast for a Lib Dem candidate in Braunton, our two extra seats could have prevented the leadership of the Council transferring to the Conservatives.   That is democracy where every single vote counts.

Since the tsunami that hit us last month some say that the Lib Dems are dead or irrelevant . I would argue that our country needs us now more than ever, to defend the rights of the individual and ensure fair and equal treatment for all, because the other parties given a chance, will always find excuses to waiver and encroach on those basic liberal values.

I am not alone in thinking this way. In the past five weeks we have over 17,000 new members and the fight back has started here in North Devon. On Monday night joining me, two Lib Dems, Mrs Carol McCormack-Hole to represent Roundswell and Mr Alan Rennles to represent Woodville, were co-opted on to Fremington Council thereby preventing the Tories forming a majority.

To face these tough times and stand up for our community we are setting up a Lib Dem branch in Fremington Parish. To get involved, follow our work on davidchalmers.mycouncillor.org.uk or contact me at chalmersdavid@icloud.com
